PACKAGING CHANGES FOR VERSION 3.5.18
====================================

1- DJVIEW BECOMES DJVIEW3
-------------------------

The following changes have been
made in order to accomodate
the new djview4 viewer.

Djview4 comes as a separate source tarball
since it only relies on the public api files:
  /usr/include/libdjvu/ddjvuapi.h
  /usr/include/libdjvu/miniexp.h

The Qt3 based viewer packaged with
djvulibre-3.5 is now called djview3
and will be phased out when Qt3 will
be considered obsolete.

The command 'make install' now installs
the viewer as ${bindir}/djview3 and
its man page as ${mandir}/man1/djview3.1.
It also creates (but does not overwrite)
symbolic links named ${bindir}/djview
and ${mandir}/man1/djview3.1.
Packagers are encouraged to delete
these fixed symbolic links and use
instead the update-alternatives method
when available.

The DjVu browser plugin ${plugindir}/nsdejavu.so
works by invoking a DjVu viewer as a slave process.
It searches viewers named 'djview', 'djview4'
or 'djview3' in that order. Therefore the
alternative link ${bindir}/djview also determines
which viewer is used as a browser plugin.

2- REORGANIZATION IN ${DATADIR}/DJVU.
-------------------------------------

Files in the directory ${datadir}/djvu
have been reorganized more rationally.
* ${datadir}/djvu/osi
    contains the files needed by the library.
* ${datadir}/djvu/djview3
    contains the files needed by djview3.
* ${datadir}/djvu/pubtext
    contains some documentation files.

3- ICONS, MIMETYPES, MENU ENTRIES.
----------------------------------

Previous version of djvulibre were relying on
complicated scripts to setup the djvu icons,
the djvu mime types, and menu entries for
the djview3 program.

This is no longer the case.
Command 'make install' no longer install these files.
Instead it creates scripts named
  ${datadir}/osi/desktop/register-djvu-mime, and
  ${datadir}/osi/djview3/register-djview-menu.
to install/uninstall the djvu mime type and
the djview3 menu entries with their respective
icons.

These scripts are designed to be invoked
during the postinstall or prerm phases
of the installation. They require the
presence of the XDG Portland tools
  xdg-icon-resource,
  xdg-mime, and
  xdg-desktop-menu.

4- PACKAGING FILES.
-------------------

The file djvulibre.spec distributed with djvulibre
has been drastically simplified since most of
its complexity was related to finding the location
of the icon files, mime type files, and menu files.

The debian directory contains the actual debian
packaging files maintained by Barak Pealmutter.
This is a good example of splitting the djvulibre
install into many smaller packages.
